I purchased the P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor as a gift for my husband, and he has been using it all over the house. It is very easy to use and program, and with the addition of a short extension cord, the meter can be left anywhere handy to read, even if plugged in behind a refrigerator. If I had to fault the meter on any one thing, it would be that the dial has no light, and the lettering is small (numbers are fine). It took a flashlight to read the dial in many cases. Only hiccup is you may need a short extension cord to plug into some tight locations. Used it to measure power consumption and power factor on my PCs, PS3, Homeserver etc. Was not compatible with my Dryer plug but I don't think this device can handle more than 15Amps anyway. Home run (electrical) - The electrical cable that carries power from the main circuit breaker panel to the first electrical box, plug, or switch in the circuit.
Permeability - A measure of the ease with which water penetrates a material.
R Value - A measure of insulation. A measure of a materials resistance to the passage of heat. The higher the R value, the more insulating "power" it has. For example, typical new home's walls are usually insulated with 4" of batt insulation with an R value of R -13, and a ceiling insulation of R -30.
Rafters - Parallel framing members that support a roof.
Ridge board - The topmost beam at the peak of a roof to which rafters tie.
Union - A plumbing fitting that joins pipes end-to-end so they can be dismantled.
W C - An abbreviation for water closet (toilet).
Warranty - In construction there are two general types of warranties. One is provided by the manufacturer of a product such as roofing material or an appliance. The second is a warranty for the labor. For example, a roofing contract may include a 20 year material warranty and a 5 year labor warranty. Many new homebuilders provide a one year warranty. Any major issue found during the first year should be communicated to the builder immediately. Small items can be saved up and presented to the builder for correction periodically through the first year after closing.
